The Battlebox is a former WWII British underground command centre inside Fort Canning Hill in the heart of Singapore City. It was part of the headquarters of Malaya Command, the army which defended Malaya and Singapore in WWII. It was inside the Battlebox that the British decided to surrender Singapore to the invading Japanese on 15 February 1942.
Today, the Battlebox is a museum that unveils the true causes behind “the worst disaster and largest capitulation in British history”.
We are not from the Government. We are from the private sector. We are from the Singapore History Consultants, a Singapore-based heritage consultancy with over 20 years’ experience in heritage education and history research consultancy services.
For now, entry into the Battlebox is through guided tours only. For timings, prices and other information, please visit our website at www.battlebox.com.sg, and go to The War Bulletin > Visitor Information.
100 per cent of your ticket price goes towards paying for the maintenance and survival of the Battlebox as a historical monument. As mentioned above, we are a private sector company, hence unlike other Government-funded museums in Singapore, we have to rely on entrance fees to pay for the costs of running the Battlebox.
The current entrance fees are not only a reflection of the quality of the programmes being created, but also the true costs of operating an important and costly historical institution like the Battlebox.
Our firm, the Singapore History Consultants, took over the hefty responsibility of bringing back to life the Battlebox, and in the process invested heavily in infrastructure and development. We are willing to take a significant risk in running the Battlebox because we are passionate about ensuring that the important story of the Fall of Singapore is told, and that this major historic site remains accessible to both Singaporeans and overseas visitors.
Despite the entrance fees at their current position, it still remains a challenge to cover the costs of operations, but we are an experienced team and we are confident that sustainability will be achieved.
For all who have paid for our guided tours through the Battlebox – we thank you for your support for the survival of the Battlebox.
Photography, videography and note-taking are not allowed in the Battlebox for a variety of reasons.
Firstly, it is a gentle request to all visitors to respect the sanctity of the Battlebox as a site of great historical significance.
Secondly, it is to ensure that our guided tours proceed as smoothly as possible, with minimal disruption and delays to both docents and participants.
Thirdly, within the Battlebox, we have a legal obligation to protect the copyrights of photos and other material that have been granted to us by other institutions.
Hence, we seek your kind understanding in this matter.
For those of you who want to capture special memories of the Battlebox, we have made available postcards of some key rooms; the postcards are on sale in the Battlebox Visitor Centre.
Yes, every day, 365 days a year – unless it’s a leap year, which in that case is 366 days a year!
Again, for timings, prices and other information, please visit our website at www.battlebox.com.sg, and go to The War Bulletin > Visitor Information.
Currently, we do not. We believe in fairness and equality for all, so we have a flat adult ticket rate for the Battlebox Tour.
Also, as mentioned above, we are a private sector company, and unlike other Government-funded museums in Singapore, we currently need to set ticket prices at a level to meet the costs of operating an important and costly historical institution like the Battlebox. In this aspect, we seek your understanding.
For groups of six people and above, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and give us the number of people in your group, your preferred date and time of the Tour, and the reason behind your booking (school group, tourist group, military history interest group, etc.). Leave us your contact details – email address and handphone number – and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can!
For groups of five people and below, just turn up at the Battlebox Visitor Centre on Fort Canning Hill and purchase your tickets over the counter! We are usually busier on weekends, so it will be prudent for you to call the Visitor Centre on +65 6338 6133 or email us at email@example.com ahead of time, preferably one or two days ahead of time, to reserve tickets for you and your group.
Currently, we do not offer online bookings and payment. All bookings will have to be done via email (firstname.lastname@example.org) or over the counter at the Battlebox Visitor Centre, and all payment must be done over the counter.
While the Battlebox Tour has no disturbing images, its historical content is catered to a slightly older audience. The tour duration can also exceed an hour, which might be a challenge for some energetic and lively young kids! If you are a parent who has or wants to turn up with your baby or young child, we understand and definitely welcome you, but please help us watch over your charge and take care of him / her as there will be other participants on the tour. Also, the enclosed spaces and walls of the Battlebox amplify sound.
If you need to bring a stroller for your baby / young child, that is fine too. There is only one flight of steps entering and leaving the Battlebox, and the rest of the bunker is level.
We thank you for your understanding and cooperation!
All Battlebox Tours begin and end inside the Battlebox Visitor Centre.
We usually begin on time, so please make your way to the Visitor Centre at least five minutes before your tour timing. Also, there are no restroom stops on the tour, so please visit the restroom before the tour!
The nearest restroom is at the Fort Canning Centre, just a 30-second walk from the Battlebox Visitor Centre.
